Blackjack terms glossary

Like in case of every other game played under the sun, even Blackjack has got its own set of niche terms and expressions with their own particular meanings. Some of them which turn up frequently in the course of the game are:-

  • Action – The total amount of money being bet in a given span of time is generally referred to as action. That is, if there have been five bets of twenty dollars each, then it is 100 dollars of action.
  • Basic Strategy – It is an accepted scheme of things regarding the playing style that enables a player to survive longer at the table and can be described as the most favorable way to play the game.
  • Blackjack – This the end point of a round in the game. A blackjack is said to have occurred when a player gets dealt a pair of card whose value amounts to 21.
  • Bust – This term describes a point in the game when a player ends up with a particular pair of cards whose total value exceeds that of 21.
  • Buy – This term is bound to come up while playing Pontoon Blackjack. This has the same meaning as that of doubling down in case of the regular version of the game.
  • Counting – This is one of the oldest strategies adopted by players in the game that involves a sharp monitoring of the cards being dealt around and making detailed calculations for the probability of winning and making conclusive decisions based on them.
  • Double Down – This is a move that a player decides to make when he or she wants to double the existing bet and receive a single card.
  • Early Surrender – This is a move which allows a player to surrender the hand before letting the dealer to check the cards for a blackjack.
  • Hard hand – Any hand during the curse of the game which has more than two aces or is completely without an ace is known as hard hand.
  • Hit – This is the request by a player for receiving another card.
  • House Percentage – This the term used for describing the casino’s advantage in a game.
  • Insurance – In case the dealer shows an ace a player is allowed to buy insurance in order to protect himself from a condition of dealer blackjack.
  • Pat Hand – A complete hand of values 17 to 21.
  • Split – When a player is dealt a particular pair and he or she may want to make two separate hands for two different bets, a split is said to have occurred.
  • Soft Hand – Using an ace as 11.
  • Stand – The declining of another card.
